Sunlight Exposure is known to be very beneficial to newborn babies. It is advised to have the baby fully naked or with minimum clothing. Expose him to the sunlight for about 15-30 minutes, every morning when the sunlight is still not that hot for baby’s skin (between 7-10 AM). But do you know what are its advantages and why is it very essential for newborn babies? Let’s find out.
•Sunlight is Source of Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps the baby’s body in absorbing Calcium which is essential for strong bones and teeth. It also helps in protecting the baby from diseases and in building up strong immune system.
•Higher Sorotonin and Energy Levels
Sunlight helps in production of sorotonin or “happy hormones” that makes baby feel less fussy and grumpy. It also helps provide high energy levels to keep baby active and aids in production of Melatonin which helps baby improve his sleeping pattern during his first few days of life.
•Aids Jaundice for Newborns
Jaundice is a condition that there is yellowing of baby’s skin or whites of the eyes caused by disposition of bile pigments, excessive breakdowns of red blood cells or in worst case, liver disease. Exposing the baby to sunlight for more than 15 minutes is a great help to cure this condition. However, on cases like liver diseases, consultation to professional doctors are much needed to properly provide cure.
Newborn’s inadequate exposure to sunlight may have harmful effect such as Vitamin D deficiency also known as Rickets. It is characterized by softening and distortion of bones which could result to bow legs.
What to Keep in Mind
When we consider doing this sunlight exposure activity with our infant, there are some factors that we need to look out for and keep on track so that we could make sure the experience would only result to what is best for your little one.
•Baby has sensitive skin, be mindful of the proper time (7-10AM) for sunlight exposure and the right amount of time which is 15-30 minutes.
•When handling a premature baby, consult your doctor first before you do the sun bathing. A go sign is needed for your baby.
•You don’t have to go to the beach for sun bathing. Even just through the glass window, you can have your baby directed to natural sunlight. You don’t have to go out especially when it is too windy.
Now that you have the proper knowledge to guide you through this activity, don’t hesitate to do this with your little one. I mean, do it together. Sunlight is free for everyone so might as well utelize this opportunity and bond with your baby in getting that daily doze of healthy sunlight.
